NATURAL FLOOD MANAGEMENT
Working with natural processes to reduce flood risk
Natural Flood Management (NFM) uses landscape-based interventions to slow, store and filter water, reducing downstream flood risk while enhancing the natural environment. At Nature Based Solutions, we deliver NFM projects in line with CIRIA’s Natural Flood Management Manual (C802), applying evidence-based approaches tailored to each catchment.
By working with natural processes rather than engineered hard defences alone, NFM can protect communities and infrastructure while also improving biodiversity, water quality and landscape resilience.
What we deliver:
We design and implement catchment-specific NFM measures, including:
- Leaky barriers and woody debris structures
- Wetland creation and floodplain reconnection
- Channel re-meandering
- Woodland planting and riparian buffer establishment
- Runoff attenuation and water storage features
From initial site assessment through to construction and monitoring, we ensure every measure is carefully planned, ecologically sensitive and aligned with wider catchment objectives.
"The work has been well planned and delivered in an efficient and cost-effective way. Nature Based Solutions are a professional and knowledgeable organisation and are well respected in the delivery of environmental conservation work in the Tees Valley."
